Rule #1. SAFETY
The roads listed on your Daytrip are rated for difficulty as follows:
LEVEL 1:  Best. 4 Lane highway

LEVEL 2:  Good. Well developed 2 lane roads, with generally ample shoulder room and well marked. Usually a main artery for the locals and relatively well traveled, but by no means busy or congested.

LEVEL 3:  Difficult. Not as well developed, may be unlined and not much shoulder. Not many cars either, and very enjoyable. Contains blind or sharp curves and hills.

LEVEL 4:  Most Difficult. Usually one and a half lanes, unlined, and no shoulder. Some sections may be gravel over asphalt. Contains blind or sharp curves and hills. Not much traffic, but no margin for error either.

PLEASE DRIVE CAREFULLY

Let's be clear. Some people may read "Difficult" and "Most Difficult" and take that to mean "Most Challenging". Daytrips are not for people pretending to be Michael Schumacher, Jeff Gordon, or Paul Tracy. PLEASE HEED THESE WARNINGS. You should always drive within the law and your own abilities, especially on LEVEL 3 & 4 roads. Many of these roads aren't as wide as most two car driveways. They will have some blind hills, sharp curves, and it's possible that you will encounter any number of obstacles, including farm machinery, bicycles, Amish buggies, animals, etc. Drive with your headlights on. It's entirely probable that you'll be able to drive 30-40 minutes and only see a couple of other cars, but when you do there will be no margin for error.

You may want to stop and appreciate a particularly beautiful scene. It's not unusual for us to stop for a quick photo. Only pull over at the safest possible spot and keep your stop brief. Always keep an eye out for traffic.

Rule #2. RESPECT

Safety reasons should be good enough, but crazy and irresponsible driving is also disrespectful to the fine folks that live and work along your Daytrip. Just drive the way that you would want visitors to your own neighborhood to drive. Hint: We've found it to be customary to receive a little wave from oncoming drivers. Be friendly and wave back, or be extra friendly and wave first. This also has a safety benefit, as "the wave" acknowledges that you see each other coming.

Rule #3. FOLLOW THE ITINERARY

Each Daytrip Itinerary is laid out as a set of directions, not a map. The real backroads (Levels 3 & 4) are mostly well marked, but not always. The itineraries really do contain more information than you'll need to successfully navigate your Daytrip. Itineraries include supplemental information on roads without streetsigns or funky intersections and forks, as well as landmarks to help you along the way. Landmarks are generally power lines, creeks, or railroad tracks, but may also be a "red barn", a "white house on a corner", etc. YOU'LL NEVER GET LOST IF YOU FOLLOW THE ITINERARY. That being said, it's always good to have a current service station type map of Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky.

Rule #4. DAYTRIPS REFLECT DRIVING TIME

To allow for consistent accuracy, drive times begin and end at various points along I-275. While some Daytrips assume a length of time that you may spend at certain destinations (an hour hike or picnic for instance), we realize that your total time may vary depending on your possible decision to spend a little longer somewhere. Also, your time may vary if you decide to eat at a restaurant or do some shopping, unless noted on the itinerary.

Rule #5. RELAX, HAVE FUN, AND ENJOY THE DRIVE

It's all about the journey. The first few times you may occasionally get a feeling that you're lost and out in the middle of nowhere. Well, the second part of that is true, but once again if you follow the itinerary you'll be fine. We totally expect that you'll find a couple of Daytrips that you really enjoy and will want to do again, so don't feel rushed to do too much in one day. You'll find that after a few Daytrips you'll become more comfortable and confident.
